Afternoon!

thought I d post a question out into the wider collective and see what other people have done.

realising there is an increasing amount of value being built onto the chassis I thought it would be prudent to get some insurance cover.

Spoke to A-Plan (who by the way were excellent) and they advised either to insure fully comprehensive on a limited mileage policy or take out a "build up" policy. Respective costs per year were £147 and £94. decided on the build up policy,

curve ball question, what is the VIN number? - er no VIN number its still being built, only got a 3 digit chassis/job number. Sorry we need a 17 digit number you will have one from your donor, no sorry not got a donor! in that case you need to speak to GBS they will have a VIN number for the chassis. I doubted this but said I would check and let them know.

Anyway spoke to Simon and he confirmed my thoughts and suggested some alternative ideas to address the insurers question.

That said I wondered what other peoples experiences are of insuring in progress kit builds? Adding as a specific item to the contents insurance is an option I need to pursue but has anyone else come across similar questions to what was posed by A-Plan in terms of VIN numbers during build phase and how have they circumvented this stumbling block?

I've seen in kit car mags adverts for insurance but not looked into it myself. As for the VIN, we don't have them yet, I'm not sure at what stage it gets assigned, but if it's pre IVA, which I'm almost certain it is, surely this can be brought forwards so you can insure the car? If not pick up a kit car mag and have a shop around, lots of others out there, someone will understand your situation.

I personally haven't bothered as I'm a serving soldier and there are a good few layers of security to get past (including armed guards) before they get to mine 🙂

Hi I have a build up cover with Adrian Flux £80.00 for the year .This covers accidental damage and fire and theft.
It's peace of mind as there is a lot of money invested -as it would not be covered on the House Insurance .I cannot see anybody breaking into my garage and loading it onto a low loader without anybody noticing but you never know.Again a fire is unlikely but you never know .I can go away on holiday without worrying too much but guess what I check first when I come home!

thanks for the replies.

Michael, out of interest did they ask about VIN numbers when you bought the policy from Adrian Flux? A Plan are still requiring the VIN code as formal identification of the vehicle

I checked the house insurance and it was a pointless conversation with the person on the other end of the phone, explaining the concept of a kitcar was the beginning of the end for that chat!

No just gave them the chassis identification number which is printed on the receipt for GBS.They understood the fact I was building a kit car.
I suppose the fact that I discussed it at the Kit car show helped. Was not impressed with A plan as they could not quote me at the show took my details but then never followed it up.

Hi All,

I insured mine with A plan using a VIN number I created and stamped onto a chassis plate purchased from GBS, I also stamped this number into the chassis.
I started the 17 digit number with GBS then added another 14 digits of numbers and letters. This number was also written on my IVA and registration applications so is the official VIN number for the vehicle. Chance of anyone creating the same number is to say the least 'long odds'. The car was IVA and registered August 2015.

I haven't got to that point yet but is that the usual procedure for VINs - we make up whatever we like and send it off to DVLA?

update... spoke with Adrian Flux and they were a lot more professional and understanding - build up cover now in place just with the 3 digit chassis number as identification of the chassis
