Hi,

I cannot decide whether or not to get my original donor callipers refurbished or to by new aftermarket ones. I have heard that there can be problems with the donor callipers. Any tips or suggestions please?

Thank you.

I refurbed my callipers myself, very simple to do, you can buy complete kits from a few sources, as long as the piston seals hadn't perished some years ago and the previous owner didn't care for it. The calliper bodies are very resilient, check the pistons for any rust on their outside, easily cleaned off or cheap enough to replace. Don't worry about rust on the exposed inside of the pistons, they're exposed to the elements so always will rust and doesn't affect operation.
It's easy to spend as much on replacing parts as the cost of a refurbished calliper, so suggest you disassemble and replace only what you need to, do whatever is cheaper! Slider bolts for instance cost money to replace but likely don't need to be replaced for instance, a good clean and repack with grease should be enough. Replacing the seals is a minimum.

Many thanks for that Nick, much appreciated. I will have a 'new' look at them and have a go I think. I am trying to do as much myself as possible and keen to use as much of the original car as possible.
